A value to heaven: Buongiorno Notte

di Andrés Flores Centeno

It is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine an unconditional near future. Walking through the streets of deserted cities, admiring desolate squares and extinguished fountains accompanied by an uncomfortable silence and the distrustful look in the eyes of our fellow citizens, seems rather the narrative suitable for this winter that promised us a change, albeit light.

Even in the world of art, there have been few changes: museums and cultural spaces struggle to excite if not even to open, with installations and posters that seem rather misleading, useful for devouring time a little, always waiting for a resolution. We now walk with our heads low, with few cultural references that make everyday life more carefree.

Yet the concrete background of our lives is always there: with the days at the end of January that begin to get a little longer, with the water of the storms that never stops falling on our windows, the winter sun that continues to warm with that icy, almost lunar warmth. While none of this seems to be enough, we might try to value the beauty that surrounds us, if only to try to imagine a better tomorrow more easily.

In fact, Anna Dormio makes her debut with this intent with her Buongiorno Notte, the first intervention in her own Monopoli (BA), placing the sky as the protagonist in a free, independent and spirited artistic event. Matured during the second period of closure that saw her confined to her hometown, Buongiorno Notte is a video projection that aims to provide a universal point of view for all those confined who feel lonely and discouraged.

A blue and morning sky appears strangely in the night [...] writes Dormio in the conceptual incipit of her work sent to the Mayor of the municipality of Monopoli in the form of a letter written as a project proposal offered free of charge for the city on 30 November. The ensuing silence led the artist to seek a personal outlet for this work of hers, made concrete for her audience from February 1st to 7th of this year in the window of the old Optics Dormio headquarters in via Rattazzi, 40.

Autonomously, the artist inserts her work in the public space, addressing citizens directly. It establishes a dialogue through a contrasting eye contact: a daytime sky that pervades the night itself. The parallelism with the almost homonymous poem by Emily Dickinson highlights the artist's intent: to give a device of light to be able to face the darkness. The viewer is therefore called upon to perform a minimal action but of immense value: looking up and seeing the impossible.

Dormio reflects on the confinement through the cities that welcomed her: Florence, during the first closure last March, and Monopoli, in this second return to the cage. In fact, it is the Florentine daytime skies that, in time-lapse, penetrate the Monopolitan night shadow.

The work is thus transformed into a place without a place, denying the night as a function of the day, trying to encapsulate the celestial infinity. The constituted heterotopia finds a conceptual rigor even in its context, ironically located in the window of an optician, whose façade references the very symbol of a rebirth: the colored stripes of an eighties rainbow.

There are certainly many uncertainties that await the future - economic, political and social - of this peninsula, but it is the gestures, like this one by Dormio, that invite us to give value to that box that sees the passing of our life: the heterotopic space without chronology which is the hope of a better future, and which we should never lose sight of again.
